چکیده

This study reports the impact of high sensitivity to early exchange in 11-grade, CSCL triads solving welland ill-structured problems in Newtonian Kinematics. Analysis of the evolution of participation inequity (PI) in group discussions suggested that participation levels tended to get locked-in relatively early on in the discussion. Similarly, high (low) quality member contributions made earlier in a discussion did more good (harm) than those made later on. Both PI and differential impact of member contributions suggest a high sensitivity to early exchange; both significantly predicting the eventual group performance, as measured by solution quality. Consequently, eventual group performance could be predicted based on what happened in the first 30-40% of a discussion. In addition to theoretical and methodological implications, implications for scaffolding CSCL groups are drawn.

Underlying Factors of Sense of Community in Asynchronous Computer Supported Collaborative Learning Environments

Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) incorporates collaborative learning activities and communication between participants and among groups via networked computers, where interactions can be synchronous or asynchronous (Naidu & Ja ̈rvela, 2006). The ubiquitous characteristic of CSCL environments, combined with their interactive group learning capabilities is becoming more and more im...

Adding eyebrows to CSCL; understanding the combined use of synchronous and asynchronous communication, and the role of motivation in computer-supported collaborative learning

This dissertation addresses the combined use of asynchronous and synchronous communication in online computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) and the relation with students’ motivation. Previously, online communication had been asynchronous and text-based. Technological developments have recently made it possible to support online learning processes by the use of rich synchronous commun...

Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning

This article provides a summary of research and developments in the field of computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL). We argue that the contribution of CSCL to vocational training comprises a set of ideas that actually prove relevant beyond CSCL to encompass the whole field of training technologies. Collaborative learning, with or without computers, is not a recipe that automatically l...

Supporting synchronous collaborative learning: A generic, multi-dimensional model

Future CSCL technologies are described by the community as flexible, tailorable, negotiable, and appropriate for various collaborative settings, conditions and contexts. This paper describes the key design issues of a generic synchronous collaborative learning environment, called Omega+. In this approach, “model-based genericity” is applied to the four dimensions of collaborative learning: the ...

The need for considering multilevel analysis in CSCL research - An appeal for the use of more advanced statistical methods

12 Abstract Per definition, CSCL research deals with the data of individuals nested in groups, 13 and the influence of a specific learning setting on the collaborative process of learning. 14 Most well-established statistical methods are not able to analyze such nested data 15 adequately. This article describes the problems which arise when standard methods are 16 applied and introduces multile...
